Beveren opens revamped public square after two years of work

In Beveren, Belgium, officials opened the renovated Puitenplein after two years of construction.

Previously a simple grassy area, the square now includes a playground and a community garden. Koen Maris, Beveren’s Youth Officer, and Joke Schauvliege, a provincial deputy, officially opened the square by cutting a ribbon. The project received funding from multiple sources including the Flemish government, the East Flanders province, and the European Union. The European Leader project provided subsidies with the goal of improving rural areas.

Local residents shaped the project through the Beveren-Zuid neighbourhood committee, which collected suggestions from people living nearby. The square aims to serve as a gathering place for residents of all ages, especially after a recent increase in young families moving into the area who previously lacked nearby play spaces. Maris stated that the new square allows people to meet, walk, or jog while children enjoy the play areas.
