Nigeria Considers Free Data for Digital Education

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) initiated discussions in Abuja to provide free data access to approved digital educational platforms across Nigeria. The commission held a public consultation with stakeholders including government agencies, mobile network operators, and educators to develop a framework for this zero-rated access.

NCC officials stated the goal is to eliminate data costs as a barrier to digital learning for millions of Nigerian students. Participants discussed eligibility requirements, funding models, and necessary safeguards to ensure the program’s transparency and sustainability.

The initiative aligns with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative and the country’s broader digital transformation goals. UNESCO representatives noted the importance of digital literacy to maximize the initiative’s impact and prevent misuse, recommending a pilot phase before full implementation to address concerns regarding quality, safety, and inclusivity.
