JAMB Warns Against Illegal University Admissions in Nigeria

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) cautioned prospective students in Nigeria against accepting admissions from tertiary institutions outside of its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). JAMB Registrar Prof.

Ishaq Oloyede stated that such “backdoor” admissions carry the risk of invalidation and exclusion from the official matriculation list. The warning coincided with an announcement from the National Universities Commission (NUC) that it will increase monitoring of universities to prevent over-admission and regulate Artificial Intelligence use.

The NUC plans post-matriculation inspections to verify universities adhere to approved student quotas and will consider stricter penalties for violations. Both agencies emphasized the importance of candidates verifying their admission status through CAPS and protecting their SIM cards, used as identity tools in the examination system, from fraud.

These measures aim to improve transparency and accountability in the Nigerian higher education system and ensure candidates receive legitimate credentials. The NUC is also focused on improving graduate employability through industrial attachments and entrepreneurship training.
