Nigeria’s INEC and NIMC Partner to Clean Voter Rolls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria will work more closely with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to eliminate duplicate voter records and improve data verification processes. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan and NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote discussed the collaboration in Abuja, following the passage of the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026.

The new law transforms NIMC into Nigeria’s foundational digital identity authority, establishing a framework for secure digital transactions and governance. INEC’s new online Continuous Voter Registration platform already uses National Identification Numbers for verification, and deeper integration with NIMC aims to streamline registration and enhance the credibility of elections.

Both agencies recognize the importance of secure data systems as technology advances, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence. The partnership seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s digital governance and build public trust in future electoral processes.
