Abia State Jails Defilers, Sees Low Maternal Deaths

The Abia State Government in Nigeria announced swift convictions in two child defilement cases, sentencing the perpetrators to 30 and 10 years in prison. Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, detailed how one defendant, originally from Akwa Ibom state, was apprehended in Nasarawa State after public attention on social media and convicted on the day of his trial.

The convictions demonstrate the state’s commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence under Governor Alex Otti, with offenders added to a Sex Offenders Register. The state’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre provides comprehensive support to survivors.

Additionally, Abia State recorded one of Nigeria’s lowest maternal mortality rates in the first quarter of 2026, with only one maternal death reported. This improvement is linked to ongoing investments in healthcare, including the renovation of primary healthcare centers and increased enrollment in the state health insurance scheme. The government is also pioneering a digital immunization record initiative with neighboring states.
