Jonathan Calls on Nigeria’s Oil Industry to Drive Tech Development

Former President Goodluck Jonathan urged Nigeria’s oil industry to lead the country’s technological advancement during a speech in Yenagoa. He stated that leveraging oil resources is critical for developing technical capacity and manufacturing equipment locally, supporting diversification beyond crude oil exports. Jonathan highlighted the significant investments oil companies already make in equipment and logistics, arguing these resources should be channeled towards boosting domestic production and skills.

He praised the Nigerian Content Development Management Board and the Petroleum Industry Act as steps toward this goal. The former president also acknowledged a “national dilemma” where the oil industry has not sufficiently contributed to broader economic development or job creation.

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, speaking through his deputy, noted the disparity between the wealth generated from the Niger Delta’s oil resources and the lack of basic amenities in local communities. The state is pursuing legislation for environmental remediation and a just transition.
