Abebe Donates Cricket Equipment to Old School

Dr. John Abebe, an alumnus of St.

Gregory’s College in Lagos, Nigeria, recently donated cricket equipment to his former school. Abebe, also a former President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, hopes to revive the school’s cricket program and its broader sporting legacy. The school historically produced many athletes, but recent attempts at sports revival through a committee had limited success.

The Old Boys Association has now employed two cricket coaches and plans to modernize the school’s sports field. They are also exploring restoring competitions with other Catholic secondary schools in Lagos. Abebe has supported cricket development for over forty years through equipment, coaching, and scholarships.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation pledged to make St. Gregory’s College a high-performance center and offer financial support to students who reach national teams.

Organizers aim to field a competitive team within a year, but funding for long-term field maintenance remains a concern. The work to rebuild the school’s sporting tradition continues.
