Nigeria Launches Social Programs to Broaden Economic Reform Benefits

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) in Nigeria praised the federal government’s newly unveiled Social Intervention Programmes (SIPs), stating they represent a key shift toward ensuring economic reforms benefit all citizens. The programs, supported by the World Bank, include five initiatives focused on community resilience, support for displaced communities, and human capital development, specifically in government, primary healthcare, and education.

The CPPE acknowledged that while the administration’s economic reforms have improved macroeconomic indicators like exchange rate stability and investor confidence, these gains must translate into improved living standards for Nigerians. The SIPs are intended to strengthen the social legitimacy of these reforms by demonstrating a commitment to citizens’ welfare.

However, the CPPE cautioned that successful implementation will require adapting international development models to Nigeria’s specific institutional realities and addressing structural drivers of poverty such as insecurity and food inflation. The center emphasized that social protection programs and structural reforms are complementary and both are needed for lasting inclusive growth.
