Nigerian Foundation Urges Tinubu to Sign Audit Bill

The AdvoKC Foundation is calling on President Bola Tinubu to sign the Federal Audit Service Bill, which has been awaiting his assent for over seven months. The youth-led organization argues the bill would modernize Nigeria’s audit system by replacing a colonial-era ordinance and granting the Auditor-General for the Federation stronger enforcement powers.

Currently, the Auditor-General can identify misuse of public funds but lacks the authority to compel accountability. The foundation connects the bill's passage to recommendations from the International Monetary Fund’s 2026 Article IV Consultation report on Nigeria, which noted that approximately two percent of the country’s GDP, an estimated N8.8tn, was spent outside of formal budget channels in 2025.

This legislation represents the fifth attempt by Nigerian lawmakers in nearly two decades to establish a modern federal audit framework. AdvoKC plans to monitor implementation of the reforms. The group hopes a signed bill will demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to fiscal responsibility to international investors and its own citizens.
