Lagos Chairman Calls for Constitutional Roles for Monarchs

Hammed Aroyewun, Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, Nigeria, is urging constitutional changes to give traditional rulers more power in governance. Aroyewun believes monarchs have been relegated to ceremonial roles despite their central importance to grassroots development. He made this appeal during the 10th coronation anniversary of Oba Semiudeen Kasali, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, praising the monarch for preserving local culture and traditions.

Other local leaders echoed Aroyewun’s sentiments, including former Lagos State House of Assembly member Adebimpe Akinsola, who emphasized the rulers’ deep connection to their communities. They argue that empowering traditional institutions would leverage indigenous wisdom and improve local leadership.

The call for constitutional recognition comes as the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom marks a decade on the throne, with praise for his commitment to cultural preservation and peaceful governance. Advocates hope to see traditional rulers formally integrated into decision-making processes.
