UNICEF Praises Sokoto’s Progress in Child Welfare

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell commended the Sokoto State Government in Nigeria for its investments in child healthcare and education during a visit on Friday. Russell toured a primary health centre and digital village, meeting with health workers, teachers, and local officials. Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir welcomed the delegation and highlighted the state’s recent efforts including the renovation of health facilities and recruitment of over 1,500 nurses and midwives.

The state has also partnered with UNICEF to establish integrated Qur’anic schools and vocational programs, graduating 2,723 out-of-school children. However, Gobir noted that insecurity poses a threat to education and healthcare delivery, requesting additional support from UNICEF to rehabilitate damaged facilities.

Russell expressed her inspiration from the collaboration between the government, communities, and UNICEF, emphasizing that investing in children is essential for Nigeria’s future. UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sokoto State and the country as a whole.
