Sharpton Backs Ghana’s UN Slave Trade Resolution

Why this is here: Ghana’s resolution aims to formally acknowledge the transatlantic slave trade, building momentum with endorsements from prominent figures like Al Sharpton and nations like Brazil.
Civil rights activist Al Sharpton supports Ghana’s push for the United Nations to recognize the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity. Ghana plans to formally present a resolution to the UN General Assembly on March 25. The proposal seeks official recognition of the slave trade and racialized enslavement of Africans as the most severe crime in history.
Brazil also pledged support for Ghana’s initiative. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced this commitment after discussions with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister. Supporters believe this recognition is crucial for advancing reparatory justice.
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama will lead a high-level event at the UN. He will deliver a keynote address on reparatory justice and present the African Union’s position. Mahama will also lay a wreath at the African Burial Ground National Monument in New York and speak at Lincoln and Temple Universities in Pennsylvania.
