Vietnam Seeks UNESCO Status for White-Cheeked Macaque Habitat

Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam is collaborating with experts to nominate the Van Long, Kim Bang, Tam Chuc landscape as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing it as home to the world’s largest population of white-cheeked macaques. A recent international workshop assessed the area’s outstanding universal values, focusing on its geological features, biodiversity, archaeological sites, and cultural significance.

The region hosts approximately 370-400 macaques, representing over 90% of the species’ wild population, a remarkable recovery from just 40 individuals in the early 2000s due to hunting and quarrying. Experts are currently refining the nomination dossier, addressing aspects like the site’s boundaries and management plan to meet UNESCO standards.

Archaeological surveys and studies of local heritage sites are bolstering the scientific basis for the nomination. Ninh Binh aims to establish effective heritage management that balances conservation, cultural preservation, and sustainable development. The province commits to continued investment in biodiversity protection and landscape preservation as it pursues UNESCO recognition.
