Native American Graduation Rates Rise with New Programs

The U.S. Bureau of Indian Education reported a record high of 79% of high schoolers graduating within four years in 2025, up from just over 50% in 2015.

This increase stems from a combination of factors including a shift toward career and technical training in schools like Chief Leschi in Washington, and standardized data collection methods to correct previously inaccurate reporting. Schools are finding success by connecting education to students’ goals, such as offering vocational training and virtual learning options.

However, progress is threatened by potential changes under the current administration. Tribal leaders express concern over the dismantling of the Department of Education and funding cuts, fearing these actions will overwhelm the Bureau and hinder improvements. Some BIE-operated schools, like the one serving the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, remain understaffed and in disrepair, awaiting promised federal support.

The future of these schools and the students they serve hinges on sustained funding and stable leadership, as tribal communities seek to fulfill treaty promises and ensure educational opportunities for Native American youth.
