Mr. T’s life teaches Chicago youth about opportunity

A writer from Chicago’s South Side reflects on how Mr. T inspired him and now informs his work with young people at Project H.O.O.D.

Laurence Tureaud, known as Mr. T, grew up in the Robert Taylor Homes housing projects in Chicago as one of 12 children. His father left when he was young, and his mother worked as a housekeeper to support the family with a small income from cleaning and welfare.

Despite facing poverty and racism, witnessing white people demean his father, Mr. T focused on family, church, and avoiding gangs. He vowed at 18 to be addressed as “Mr. T” to demand the respect his family had been denied. Mr. T excelled in sports, earning a football scholarship to Prairie View A&M University, though he later pursued work in Chicago to find opportunity.

He worked multiple jobs, including as a bouncer, and confronted those who robbed his mother, later becoming a bodyguard to protect others. The author believes Mr. T transformed a perceived failure to protect his mother into a positive calling, choosing hard work and self-reliance over negative paths. He shares a childhood story of Mr. T promising to buy his mother a house, a promise she encouraged through values of hard work and saving. The author now uses Mr.

T’s life as a lesson for the children he mentors, emphasizing that circumstances do not define destiny, and that faith, work, and self-belief create opportunity. Mr. T ultimately fulfilled his promise, buying his mother a mansion in Lake Forest, the same area where she once cleaned houses.
