New York Halts AI Data Centers Over Resource Strain

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a moratorium on new hyperscale AI data centers in New York state. The governor cited concerns that these facilities consume excessive amounts of power and water, potentially straining the state’s energy grid and increasing costs for residents. New York already has the fourth highest energy costs in the nation, with prices 56% above the national average as of April 2026.

The moratorium, lasting up to one year, will allow New York to develop a framework requiring AI companies to contribute to grid upgrades and address land use, noise pollution, and water supply impacts. Hochul intends to lift the moratorium once a policy is implemented to ensure data centers help cover increasing energy bills and adhere to local zoning laws.

The move follows a bill passed by the New York Legislature with similar aims. Hochul stated her goal is to ensure technological advancement benefits all New Yorkers, not just a few, and that New York leads by example in responsible AI development.
