They Fight Tells Story of DC Boxing Coach

Hulu releases the film They Fight on July 17, portraying the true story of Walter Manigan, a Washington, D.C. boxing coach who used the sport to mentor at-risk youth after serving prison time. Manigan founded the Lyfe Style boxing program at the Ferebee-Hope Recreation Center, aiming to develop character alongside boxing skills. He provided not only athletic training but also essential resources like meals, gear, and travel funds, often securing them through personal fundraising.

The film draws inspiration from Ragahleak Bartee and Quincey Williams, two men Manigan coached who went on to become a police officer and professional boxer, respectively. Both credit Manigan with instilling values of discipline and purpose.

Though Manigan struggled with opioid addiction and passed away in 2022, his legacy of positive influence lives on through his former students. The film focuses on the triumphs of his pupils and the enduring impact of his coaching, rather than his personal struggles.
