Utah Inland Port Invests Millions to Protect Great Salt Lake

The Utah Inland Port Authority pledged $7.5 million to land conservation efforts around the Great Salt Lake and announced a partnership with Utah Water Way to reduce industrial water use. Utah officials recognize the Great Salt Lake’s shrinking wetlands, critical habitat for migratory birds and natural water filtration systems, are threatened by development.

The funding will help the Utah Department of Natural Resources protect these remaining wetlands by establishing a defined “buffer area” between development and the lake’s shoreline. The port authority’s commitment represents an increase of $2.5 million over previous expectations, stemming from a recent policy change that allocates inland port profits to environmental impact mitigation.

Simultaneously, the port will work with Utah Water Way to promote water conservation within its facilities, addressing the broader issue of consumptive water loss contributing to the lake’s decline. State and local leaders view this collaboration as a model for balancing economic growth with environmental preservation, with a new natural resources policy slated for a vote in September.
