Utah Artist Shaped State’s Heritage Through Faith & Art

John Hafen, a Latter-day Saint painter and pioneer, significantly impacted Utah’s artistic landscape despite facing financial hardship throughout his life. In 1890, Hafen was called on a mission to Paris, France, alongside other artists, to hone their skills, not to preach, preparing them to create the murals within the Salt Lake Temple.

Hafen’s time in France refined his style, and upon returning to Utah, he advocated for art’s role in strengthening faith, producing hundreds of paintings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also co-founded the Springville Museum of Art, Utah’s first art museum, and the Springville Art Movement.

Vern Swanson, co-author of Hafen’s biography, “John Hafen: Utah’s Poet Painter,” notes Hafen’s unwavering devotion and talent. An exhibition titled “Enduring Beauty: John Hafen and the Power of Art” is currently on display at the Springville Museum of Art through July 25, showcasing Hafen’s landscapes and portraits.
