Retired Entrepreneur Finds Purpose Raising Service Dogs

Jerry Burns, a 72-year-old entrepreneur from the US, transitioned from running two wholesale businesses to volunteering with Guiding Eyes for the Blind after his retirement. For 53 years, Burns dealt in tobacco, candy, and novelty goods, eventually scaling back his work in his late 60s while seeking a fulfilling post-career activity. He began volunteering with the organization, initially assisting at a breeding kennel and then becoming a puppy raiser.

Burns discovered a particular affinity for German Shepherds, noting their intelligence but also their tendency to struggle in kennel environments. He currently fosters Geneva, a German Shepherd puppy, with the understanding she will eventually enter formal service dog training. He adopted Geneva’s father, Kohl, after the organization determined he was better suited as a pet.

The program has given Burns a renewed sense of structure and community, connecting him with other volunteers and the individuals who benefit from service dogs. He anticipates receiving another puppy placement in the fall, despite his wife’s possible reservations.
