Spanish company Vortex Bladeless is developing a wind turbine that uses a tall, vertical mast to generate electricity instead of traditional rotating blades. The device oscillates in the wind, harnessing energy from vortex shedding, a phenomenon typically avoided in engineering due to the vibrations it causes in structures like bridges.

Instead of reducing these vibrations, Vortex Bladeless designed its turbine to utilize them. An elastic rod allows the mast to resonate at specific wind speeds, converting the resulting motion into electricity via a generator.

This simpler design aims to reduce maintenance and the risk to wildlife, potentially making wind energy more accessible. Currently, the largest prototype generates around 100 watts, significantly less than conventional turbines which produce millions of watts. Researchers are working to improve its efficiency, durability, and scalability for applications such as powering smart city infrastructure, agricultural sensors, and telecommunications equipment.
