Ukraine Returns Bodies of 528 Soldiers

Why this is here: Ukraine has repatriated approximately 18,500 bodies of its service members since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine repatriated the bodies of 528 fallen soldiers from Russian-held territory. The operation involved coordination between the SBU, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Police, and the State Emergency Service. Remains now move to specialized medical facilities for examination.

Investigators will perform forensic work and DNA matching to identify each person. The SBU plans to return identified remains to families for burial. Ukrainian officials note identifying remains proves difficult due to the condition of recovered fragments.

This exchange follows a return of 1,000 bodies on April 9. Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has recovered roughly 18,500 bodies of its service members. Negotiations continue under a framework established during talks in Istanbul, but complete identification remains a challenge.
