Germany Hosts Most Ukrainian Refugees

Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic currently host the largest numbers of Ukrainians living under temporary protection within the European Union. Eurostat data from late March 2026 shows Germany providing refuge for over 1.27 million people, roughly 29 percent of the total across the EU. Poland follows with about 961,000 registered Ukrainians, and the Czech Republic hosts nearly 380,000.

The total number of Ukrainians with temporary protection decreased by nearly 69,000 in March, with Italy seeing the largest reduction of over 30,000. Experts caution this decrease does not confirm a large-scale return to Ukraine. Changes in registration, data updates, and movement between EU countries may account for the shift.

Germany, Spain, and Romania all registered increases, suggesting ongoing internal migration. The EU has extended temporary protection to Ukrainians until March 2027, allowing them time to consider long-term plans for work and housing while the war in Ukraine continues.
