Zurich Maps City for Accessibility

The city of Zurich, Switzerland is working to improve urban navigation for people with mobility limitations. Zurich launched a pilot project in 2023, called Zuriact, where people with disabilities identified problem areas and shared their experiences moving through the city.

The city digitally recorded this feedback to better understand diverse needs, a mother with a double stroller faces different challenges than a person using a cane or a wheelchair. Currently, Zurich offers routes for people with disabilities on its website, allowing users to plan trips based on their specific requirements.

The city plans to expand this data citywide and develop an app that filters routes based on individual needs. To gather even more detailed information, Zurich intends to equip its street cleaning vehicles with cameras to photograph and analyze the urban landscape. This will help create a highly customized pedestrian experience.
