Madrid to Open AI-Monitored Tunnel for Real-Time Traffic Control

Madrid will open a 675-meter tunnel in December connecting the M-30 to the Cuatro Torres area, equipped with artificial intelligence to monitor traffic flow. The tunnel is part of a larger project to bury the northern section of Paseo de la Castellana, bringing the city’s total underground traffic tunnels to over 40 kilometers.

The AI system will identify vehicles, manage speeds, detect incidents and pollution, and automatically adjust ventilation based on air quality. This self-regulating system aims to proactively address potential issues like congestion or disabled vehicles, enhancing safety for drivers.

Currently, excavation for a second tunnel level is planned to extend the connection to the Begoña neighborhood and the Madrid Nuevo Norte district, though full operation awaits its completion. Alongside the tunnel, the city is constructing Parque Castellana, a 70,000 square meter green space with solar panels intended to power the tunnel’s vehicles.
