Europe Plans for a Future Without Traditional Air Conditioning

The European Union is preparing to phase out traditional air conditioning units due to the environmental impact of the gases they use, prompting research into refrigerant-free alternatives. Scientists and companies across Europe are developing solid-state refrigeration systems that rely on materials changing temperature when exposed to external forces like pressure or electric current, instead of circulating polluting gases.

Prototypes utilizing nickel-titanium alloys, semiconductors, magnetic fields, and flexible plastics are currently undergoing testing in real-world settings. While these technologies, including systems from companies like Exergyn, Mimic Systems, and Magnotherm, show promise, large-scale adoption depends on established manufacturers like Daikin and Samsung integrating them into mass production.

Europe is warming faster than other continents, increasing demand for cooling, but currently only around 20% of European homes have air conditioning, compared to 90% in the United States. Experts emphasize prioritizing passive cooling methods like shade and ventilation before relying on active air conditioning.
