Spain Sees Shift From Iron Grilles to Security Glass

Homeowners in Spain are increasingly replacing traditional iron grilles with laminated safety glass as a security measure. For decades, iron grilles were a common sight, particularly on ground floors, intended to deter burglars.

However, many find them visually unappealing. Laminated safety glass consists of two or more layers of glass bonded with a plastic interlayer, typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB), which holds the glass together if broken, preventing easy access.

While not shatterproof, this glass significantly delays forced entry, giving potential burglars less time to break in, as most attempts last only a few minutes. The effectiveness of laminated glass is measured by the European standard EN 356, which classifies security glass based on its resistance to various attacks.

Beyond security, the glass offers benefits like improved soundproofing, reduced maintenance compared to metal grilles, and maintains natural light. Installation often involves replacing only the glass pane, reducing overall costs.
