Andean Bear Cubs Born in Peru Signal Conservation Success

In the Chaparrí Ecological Reserve in Lambayeque, Peru, two Andean bear cubs were born to a mother bear. The births represent over 25 years of work by the Santa Catalina de Chongoyape Muchik Peasant Community and civil society organizations. They have championed a conservation model focused on forest protection, illegal hunting eradication, and local community involvement in biodiversity care.

The success extends beyond the Andean bear’s recovery. The species plays a key role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration, which in turn supports water capture, storage, and regulation for thousands of families and agriculture in the Chancay River basin.

Officials at Chaparrí state the new births demonstrate that community-based conservation can effectively protect Peru’s natural heritage. They also highlighted collaboration with institutions, researchers, and communities to strengthen Andean bear protection throughout the country.
