Barcelona Plans Knowledge Hub by 2030

The Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat of Catalonia, and the Spanish Government established an institutional commission to advance the Ciutadella del Coneixement—a planned knowledge hub—expected to be fully operational by the end of 2030. The project aims to transform an 18-hectare area around Ciutadella Park into a leading European center for research, innovation, and culture. Representatives from research institutions like the Fundació Pasqual Maragall and the CSIC attended the commission’s formal launch.

Over the next three years, roughly 500 million euros will be invested in the initiative, including construction of new research buildings at the former Mercat del Peix and a new state library near the França Station. The Barcelona Zoo is also undergoing a significant transformation focused on biodiversity preservation.

However, some elements, like the complete renovation of the Zoo and the new state library, are slated for completion only by 2030. The project’s success depends on continued collaboration between multiple institutions and securing long-term funding for ongoing research and preservation efforts.
