Gaudí’s Spiritual Dimension Examined in New Monograph

In Spain, Qüestions de Vida Cristiana published a special issue exploring the spirituality of Antoni Gaudí, coinciding with the centennial of his death. The monograph features fifteen experts analyzing how Gaudí’s Christian faith influenced his architecture, particularly the Sagrada Família basilica. Experts note that despite being reserved about his personal faith, Gaudí imbued his designs with religious symbolism, viewing his work as a means to express his devotion and serve God’s will.

Researchers point to sources like the Bible of Torres i Amat and the writings of Prosper Guéranger as likely influences on Gaudí’s symbolic language, particularly his fascination with the Book of Revelation. Beyond religious texts, scholars also examine the architect’s connection to nature and philosophical traditions.

The issue also considers the social context of Gaudí’s most famous project, the Sagrada Família, and how it reflects Barcelona’s turbulent history. The publication of this monograph aims to offer a deeper understanding of the interplay between faith, nature, and artistic expression in Gaudí’s enduring legacy.
