Catalonia Urges Early Flu and COVID-19 Vaccination

Catalonia health officials are encouraging residents to get vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 ahead of the autumn season. Data from last winter showed that 75% of patients admitted to intensive care units in Catalonia with the flu had not been vaccinated, illustrating a clear link between vaccination status and severe illness.

More than 1.4 million flu shots and nearly 1 million COVID-19 doses were administered in Catalonia during the last campaign, a response officials praise as mature and committed. The effectiveness of vaccines is now supported by evidence and science, and early vaccination is crucial to allow the body time to develop antibodies before widespread viral circulation.

The annual need for updated vaccines acknowledges the evolving nature of these viruses. Appointments will open at the end of July through La Meva Salut or directly at local health centers, with priority given to vulnerable groups.
