Why this is here: The ministry will base its decision on a recent Constitutional Court sentence regarding a co-brotherhood member denied participation in activities due to her gender.

Spain’s Equality Ministry will study the possibility of legally challenging the statutes of the Brotherhood of Purísima Sangre de Sagunt. The statutes currently exclude women from participating in Holy Week processions. The ministry cites a recent Constitutional Court ruling.

The ruling clarifies that religious organizations’ internal rules cannot violate equality and non-discrimination rights. The ministry will assess if the brotherhood’s statutes violate the Spanish Constitution. Officials state the right to equality limits organizational rights.

Sagunt’s mayor expressed support for both tradition and equality. He believes full female participation would enhance the city’s faith, heritage, and identity. The town hall previously voiced concern about potential revocation of the procession’s national tourism designation.
