Spain Honors Patron Saint of Sailors and Fishermen

Coastal communities across Spain celebrated the Day of Our Lady of Carmen on July 16, honoring the patron saint of sailors, fishermen, and the Spanish Navy. The tradition, deeply rooted in towns along the Mediterranean, Cantabrian, and Atlantic coasts, originates from devotion to the Virgin of Mount Carmel. Celebrations center around a maritime procession where the image of the Virgin travels through the streets to the port.

Following a mass, the statue embarks on a boat accompanied by decorated vessels. Boats sound their sirens as thousands watch from the port and promenade.

A particularly emotional moment occurs with the floral offering. Residents and sailors cast flowers into the sea to remember those lost at sea and ask for protection for those who continue to work on the water, strengthening the historical connection between coastal communities and the Virgin of Carmen.
