Catalonia to Transform Highway Into Coastal Promenade

The Generalitat of Catalonia will begin transforming a section of the N-II highway in the Maresme region into a pedestrian and bicycle promenade. The project, announced in Mataró, will invest 384 million euros through 2032 to reshape mobility in the area. Plans include lane reductions on the N-II, new access points to the C-32 highway, over 40 kilometers of bike lanes, and improvements to public transport.

The initiative responds to years of local demands for a more sustainable and accessible transportation network. Officials emphasize the project’s collaborative design with municipalities and its potential to improve urban quality and connectivity.

The government of Catalonia must execute the funding by 2032 or return it to the Ministry of Transport. Initial work, such as a new roundabout in Alella and a pedestrian bridge in Sant Pol de Mar, is already underway, with the first phase of N-II pacification slated to begin in 2027.
