Spain Installs AI Radars to Detect More Than Speed

Pamplona’s city council in Spain will soon deploy AI-powered radars to monitor traffic. These new radars surpass traditional systems by identifying multiple infractions beyond speeding. They can detect drivers using mobile phones, not wearing seatbelts, making improper lane changes, and running red lights.

The radars cover multiple lanes in both directions and can be customized with specific speed limits per lane. The Spanish Metrology Centre has already approved the radars for use, with installation expected in June. Each radar costs roughly 20,000 euros.

Currently, Pamplona is the only city confirmed to install the technology, though Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic has recently updated existing radars with more precise and dynamic speed limits. The effectiveness of these new radars across Spain’s roadways remains to be seen.
