Alfonso X Forged Spain’s First History

King Alfonso X of Castile commissioned 'Estoria de España', a history detailing the Iberian Peninsula from biblical times to his father’s reign in the 13th century. Though often credited as the sole author, researchers now understand Alfonso functioned as an editor and director, coordinating multiple authors and shaping the narrative.

He selected themes, revised drafts, and organized content, similar to a modern editor or architectural designer. The chronicle aimed to legitimize the idea of a unified Spain, emphasizing the centrality of Castile while incorporating histories of diverse peoples, Iberians, Celts, Romans, and Visigoths, who inhabited the peninsula.

While not using the term "Reconquista," the text details the rise of Christian kingdoms in the north following the Muslim invasion of 711. 'Estoria de España' significantly influenced Spanish historiography for centuries, demonstrating the power of historical narratives in shaping collective identity. Alfonso X also fostered advancements in law, astronomy, translation, and the development of the Castilian language.
