Colombian AI Detects Breast Cancer Quickly

UCompensar’s engineering faculty in Colombia developed PreventIA, an artificial intelligence tool that recently won first place in the Innpacto Rosa challenge. The project aims to reduce breast cancer detection time and improve access to diagnosis in hospitals with limited resources. PreventIA analyzes medical images, identifying anomalies with over 90% effectiveness and delivering results in under a minute.

The AI trained for two years using more than 100 GB of medical images from databases in Europe and Japan. It focuses on identifying malformations and classifying calcifications as benign or malignant. Judges favored PreventIA’s potential use in rural areas with limited connectivity, accessible via web and mobile platforms.

Researchers emphasize that PreventIA is designed to assist, not replace, healthcare professionals. The team now plans to test the system in real clinical settings in Bogotá. While promising, further validation is needed to confirm its broader applicability across Colombia’s healthcare system.
