Fiamma Prepares for Copa de la Reina Final

Fiamma Benítez Iannuzzi, a midfielder for Atlético de Madrid and the Spanish national team, spoke with El País before Saturday’s Copa de la Reina final against Barcelona in Gran Canaria, Spain. Born in Denia, Spain in 2004 to Argentinian parents, Fiamma notes her mother’s unrealized dream of playing soccer shaped her own passion for the sport. She briefly lived apart from her father while playing for Levante and Valencia, before joining Atlético in 2024.

This season, Fiamma has scored 14 goals and provided eight assists in 41 matches. Despite her individual success, Atlético currently sits fourth in Liga F, 13 points behind Real Sociedad who hold the last Champions League qualifying position. She acknowledges the team has not met its goals this season.

Fiamma recognizes Barcelona’s dominance—they’ve won seven consecutive league titles—but believes her team can compete with focus and strategy. She shares the field with Barcelona players on the Spanish national team, admiring their skill while preparing to face them as opponents. Currently studying Law, Fiamma feels her education helps her think differently on the field, and the team is focusing on mental preparation for the challenging final.
