Why this is here: The park is currently flooded with 2,660 liters of water per second from the Gigüela River, sustaining one of Spain’s most important wetlands.

Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park is fully flooded, covering 1,500 hectares. Water contributions from the Gigüela River caused the inundation for the third consecutive year. The Puente Navarro dam, with a capacity of 4.16 cubic hectometers, is full and releasing water.

Currently, 2.66 cubic meters of water per second enter the park via the Gigüela River. Recent Atlantic fronts have connected the newly flooded areas, increasing the total flooded surface. The park's maximum floodable area is traditionally 1,750 hectares, but vegetation buildup has reduced it to 1,500 hectares.

The park historically relied on the Gigüela and Guadiana rivers, plus the overexploited Aquifer 23. A 1956 law altered the Gigüela riverbed, favoring water infiltration into the aquifer and reducing direct surface flow to the park. Las Tablas de Daimiel became a national park in 1973.
