VR Down Empowers People with Disabilities to Gain Independence

DeuSens, in collaboration with Fundación VASS and Down España, launched VR Down-Paso Adelante, a virtual reality tool designed to help people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities prepare for employment and daily life in Spain. The platform uses a progressive approach, starting with mixed reality to ease users into full virtual reality immersion.

The program focuses on practical skills like navigating public transportation, workplace safety, including proper use of personal protective equipment, and completing everyday tasks such as leaving the house. Content was developed with therapeutic teams from Down España and features people with Down syndrome providing voices and interpretations within the simulations.

VR Down utilizes hand tracking, eliminating the need for controllers and promoting natural interaction. Initial trials demonstrated the technology increased confidence, autonomy, and social skills among participants. The application is now freely available on the Meta Store, allowing wider access for families and organizations.
