Why this is here: About one in ten women in Spain will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, according to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology.

Spain’s Ministry of Health will extend breast cancer screening to women ages 45 to 74. The program previously covered women from 50 to 69. This change responds to data showing roughly 10% of breast cancers occur in women under 50.

The Spanish National Health System will gradually implement the expanded screening over three years. Communities will have six years to fully invite new age groups. Initial screenings may occur every three years, before returning to a two-year cycle.

Navarra and Galicia have already piloted parts of this expansion. Between 2022 and 2024, Navarra observed a 4.20% detection rate among women ages 45 to 49.

In 2023, Galicia reported an 8.7% detection rate for women ages 70 to 74. The government estimates a budget impact of 534 million euros from 2025 to 2029. Further research will assess long-term effectiveness.
