Martian Pilgrims Cycle the Camino De Santiago

In Spain, the association Los Peregrinos de Marte, Martian Pilgrims, organizes an annual adapted bicycle pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago for children with intellectual disabilities. Founded by parents seeking inclusive sporting opportunities, the group completed five stages of the pilgrimage in 2023 and subsequent years.

Between nine and twelve children, aged 12 to 19, participate alongside their families and a team of volunteers. The pilgrimage combines cycling on adapted tricycles with a final walking stretch to Santiago de Compostela.

Volunteers like Eva García Perea, a nurse from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, provide round-the-clock support. Organizers emphasize the therapeutic benefits of sport and shared experience for both the children and their parents, who often provide constant care.

The association relies on sponsorships and fundraising to cover logistical costs, including lodging and a support vehicle. They aim to expand volunteer support to offer parents more respite during the demanding journey and plan to continue the pilgrimage annually.
