Ho Chi Minh City Plans Free Healthcare for Seniors

Ho Chi Minh City authorities propose to fully subsidize health insurance premiums for residents aged 60 to 65. The initiative seeks to broaden health coverage for the elderly and align with national policies addressing Vietnam’s aging population. If the municipal People's Council approves the plan, approximately 195,918 people will receive coverage with an estimated annual cost exceeding VNĐ267 billion (over $10 million).

Currently, the city provides full subsidies for citizens between 65 and 75 years old. Recent data shows that over 276,208 residents aged 65 to 75 have received health insurance cards under an existing resolution, accounting for 1.47 million medical visits and over VNĐ1.08 trillion ($41 million) in covered costs.

Officials believe the expanded policy will improve access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations like freelance workers. The city aims to achieve over 95% health insurance coverage by 2026 and universal coverage by 2030.
