Ex-Military Doctor Still Seeks Vietnam War Remains

Dr Trần Văn Bản, an 82-year-old former military doctor from Vietnam, continues to search former battlefields for the remains of fallen soldiers, fulfilling a decades-long promise to bring them home to their families. For 47 years, Dr Bản has revisited sites in areas like Củ Chi and Tây Ninh, relying on wartime records, witness testimonies, and meticulously kept notebooks to locate burial sites.

He served as a medic during the war, witnessing the high casualty rate within his unit of nearly 1,000 soldiers, where only around 100 survived. Dr Bản began his search in 1979, initially traveling by bicycle and overcoming geographical obstacles to reach potential grave sites.

He has personally verified over 2,300 burial sites and directly assisted in returning the remains of 134 soldiers to their families, carefully documenting each case. He now focuses on preserving memories and advocating for wider DNA testing to identify remains, fearing the loss of eyewitness accounts as veterans age and landscapes change. He hopes future generations will utilize new technologies to complete the mission of honoring every sacrifice made during the war.
