Vietnam’s Lý Sơn Island Receives Conservation Boost

Why this is here: The project combined physical renovations of over 17,000 square metres with artistic murals, directly linking environmental awareness to improvements in community spaces on An Bình Island.

AkzoNobel, the IUCN, and local partners completed a marine conservation project on Lý Sơn Special Zone’s An Bình Island. The collaboration renovated over 17,000 square metres of buildings. This included 83 homes, a school, and a mausoleum.

The project, themed “Born to be Wild,” also created 20 murals promoting sea turtle and marine conservation. Nearly 10,000 litres of paint were donated for the effort. Partners conducted training for local fishers and teachers on marine ecosystem conservation and waste reduction.

From March 21-23, the IUCN trained teachers and guided fishers in monitoring sea turtle bycatch. They also handed over the completed murals to local authorities. The partners plan to expand these efforts to other marine protected areas in Vietnam, including Côn Đảo and the Chàm Islands.
