Street Child World Cup Concludes in Mexico

Why this is here: Players from over 20 countries gathered in Mexico for the fifth edition of the Street Child World Cup, beginning May 6 and concluding with finals on Thursday.

Young people from 28 teams competed in the Street Child World Cup in Texcoco, Mexico. The tournament, which began May 6, brought together players from more than 20 countries. Ireland’s U2 band member Larry Mullen Jr. flipped the coin at the boys’ Shield final, with Bono and other bandmates watching.

Brazil’s boys team won the Cup final against India, while Mexico’s girls defeated Kenya. Indonesia’s boys and Brazil’s girls won their respective Shield divisions. Players noted opportunities to connect with peers from different nations and participate in workshops addressing issues faced by street-connected youth.

Street Child United CEO John Wroe explained the event aims to amplify the voices of these young people on topics like education and safety. Some players experienced air travel and international meetings for the first time. Organizers acknowledge the need for continued efforts to support street-connected children globally.
