Why this is here: The forest’s recovery involved managing water levels in the peat soil, allowing native melaleuca seeds to regenerate the ecosystem after the fire.

U Minh Thuong National Park in Vietnam has largely regenerated after a 2002 fire damaged 2,200 hectares of forest. Authorities built embankments and canals to control water levels and prevent future fires. Melaleuca seeds in the peat soil sprouted and spread, contributing to the forest’s recovery.

After 24 years, approximately 2,000 hectares have recovered. Trees now reach over 10 meters tall with trunk diameters of 15–20 centimeters. The park’s ecosystem has rebounded, attracting wildlife like birds, storks, and bats.

U Minh Thuong National Park now includes peatland forest, grasslands, and wetlands. These habitats support diverse aquatic life and freshwater fish.

The park welcomes thousands of annual visitors and combines conservation with eco-tourism. It is home to 32 mammal species and 170 bird species.
