Philippines Opens Research Center to Protect National Bird

Conservationists and the Apayao local government in the Philippines recently opened the Apayao Biosphere Reserve Research Center. The center will facilitate ecological studies and knowledge sharing within the Apayao Biosphere Reserve, designated as such two years ago.

The primary focus of conservation efforts is the Philippine eagle, with the first active nest discovered in the province over a decade ago. Conservationists emphasize that protecting the species requires both research and extensive community engagement.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation is currently undertaking a project to establish Apayao as a sustainable habitat for the Philippine eagle. Rappler’s environment reporter, Iya Gozum, will feature Dr. Jayson Ibañez, director of operations at the foundation, discussing the project on July 18.
