Memoir Details Goh Keng Swee’s China Work

Dr. Phua Swee Liang compiled a 244-page book detailing her late husband, Dr.

Goh Keng Swee’s, work as an economic advisor to China from 1985 to 1990. The book draws from photographs, gifts, itineraries, and personal records.

Dr. Goh advised China during its initial economic reforms, following an invitation from President Deng Xiaoping after his 1984 retirement from Singaporean politics.

The “museum-style memoir” titled Dr Goh Keng Swee and China's Economic Renaissance includes photos of Dr. Goh with leaders like Deng Xiaoping, Zhao Ziyang, Gu Mu, and a younger Xi Jinping.

Two hundred copies were distributed at a launch event at the Four Seasons Hotel to former ministers and civil servants. Dr. Phua hopes the book will educate younger generations about this period.

Dr. Phua spent roughly four months assembling the book after initially struggling to find a publisher.

She believes these preserved records complete a vital part of history. The book does not detail the specifics of Dr.

Goh’s advice or its impact on China’s economic development. Work continues to understand this period fully.
