Bangkok Transforms Waste Facility Into Eco Park

Bangkok’s Chadchart Sittipunt inspected the On Nut waste disposal facility Saturday, announcing plans to convert the 580-rai site into a Green Eco Park. The facility, operating for over 30 years as a landfill, has seen the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plant more than 48,000 trees to reforest previously used disposal zones.

The city will phase out two ageing composting plants, one expiring in 2026, the other in June 2027, and convert those areas into additional green space. Bangkok is also implementing real-time odour monitoring using electronic “e-Noses” and CCTV to address long-standing complaints from residents.

The long-term plan envisions a park with enclosed waste management systems, including waste-to-energy incineration and biogas production. The BMA aims to balance legal obligations with progress toward sustainable waste management and increased urban green space.
